Youth Congress extends support to Panchayat members' hunger strike

Pradesh Youth Congress (PYC), J&K on Friday extended full support to the ongoing week-long hunger strike started by the elected Panchayat members under the leadership of All J&K Panchayat Conference against the non-payment of Rs 1,000-crore MGNREGA liabilities.

            Led by Uday Chib, President PYC, J&K said government has no roadmap for the empowerment of PRIs in the J&K and is just befooling the people of the J&K. He said that the J&K machinery is not working as per the expectations of the Panchayati Raj Institutions of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that there was no empowerment of Panchayats in J&K since the Panchayat polls were conducted in J&K. He added that more than a year has been passed but till date no initiative has been taken by the government to empower the PRIs in J&K.

            Chib asked government should first clear the Rs 800 crore liabilities created in the Rural Development Department. He said if government fails to clear the liabilities of labourers that what we say about the empowerment of Panchayats. He also criticised the BJP Government at the Centre for its failure to eradicate corruption from the country. He said that Rural Development Department is a hub of corruption and the government has been miserably failed to initiate any action against the corrupt practices.

            Chib appealed to the Lt Governor to consider the genuine demands of All Jammu Kashmir Panchayat Conference by clearing MGNREGA liabilities, adequate security to Panchayat members and enhancement of their monthly honorarium of Panchs and Sarpanchs.
