Jammu:
A seminar on career guidance and educational opportunities for youth was organised by Sandeep Chaudhary, SP South Jammu at Jammu. The seminar was attended by students from various streams of studies.  SP South addressed the students in detail about various career and educational opportunities available to them during graduation and after graduation. SP South stated that the main focus areas of the seminar were various examinations conducted after graduation for different jobs and scholarship schemes and special emphasis was laid on UPSC exam.

While interacting with students SP South emphasised on the importance of exposure for the students. Most of the competitive exams for jobs and admission to institutes of higher education are conducted in a very merit-based system. The students coming from rural background face difficulty in these exams due to the lack of exposure. They have to compete with students from elite backgrounds of good schooling and famous colleges. The only way to get through tough exams for students from humble backgrounds is to prepare themselves with hard work and dedication. While suggesting the tools for exposure preparation, the SP emphasised on the importance of internet and easy availability of knowledge through Youtube lectures and different open source websites.

Exposure can come through different means like travel, books, magazines, movies and seminars etc. Students from Jammu can use their smartphones and internet to travel the places through virtual means even when they can not afford to actually travel to such places. SP told about the travel documentaries produced by Rick Steves that are available on Youtube for free. The importance of understanding and appreciating the relation between travel and geographical knowledge was emphasised upon. Travelling and knowing about new places opens human mind to greater things.

Books can play a very vital role in grooming young people for their bright futures. The SP named books like The Alchemist which are available at very cheap prices in market. But can play a very vital role in opening the minds of young people. Books by writers like Ramachandra Guha and Gurcharan Das can help a young mind understand our country in a much better manner. The importance of reading magazines like Time, The Economist, Frontline, Economic and Political Weekly is very important for developing a perspective on current issues. Same goes for the newspapers. India has a history of cultivating very rich and informative newspapers like The Hindu, The Indian Express and The Tribune etc. Jammu has produced many good newspapers which play a vital role in day to day life of citizens of the state. It is essential for young people to read newspapers on regular basis.

The interaction also included the importance of understanding critical intellectual discourse and its role in the larger politics. Debate and discussion on various issues of the day is beauty of Indian democracy. Students should not shy away from debate and discussion but that should be done in a very civilized manner.
The career guidance part of the seminar focused on preparation for UPSC, SSC, Assistant Commandant Exam, Bank PO exam, NABARD and RBI grade-A and grade-B exams. A detailed discussion about understanding the syllabus of these exams was done. The importance of English as a global language and its vitality in cultivating a career was also discussed. The admission procedure for institutes like JNU, IIMs and Indian Statistical Institute was also discussed.

Scholarships like Inlaks, Commonwealth, Fulbright, Chevening and Daad are available for Indian students to carry on their education in foreign universities. More details about them can be obtained from website of Ministry of Human Resources and Development.  The SP further stated that young students are like soil and it is responsibility of the elders of the society to shape them in a beautiful manner so that they can lead a life of dignity and honour. Unemployment is the single biggest reason behind drug abuse and violence in society. If young people can have dignified careers, they will automatically stay away from drug abuse and violence. The cultivation of positive young minds is the responsibility of elders of the society and if this job is done with responsibility, a very civilised and patriot society can be automatically created.
