JU commemorates Armed Forces Flag Day

Srinagar:The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu today commemorated Armed Forces Flag Day to remember the supreme sacrifices made by our valiant Armed Forces personnel for protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country by organizing a talk by Col. (Retd) Virender Singh for the University students to generate awareness about the sacrifices made by Armed Forces and also about the significance of the day at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. Prof. Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs was the Chief Guest at the occasion. In his address, Prof. Keshav Sharma congratulated the Department of Students Welfare for organizing such a meaningful event for the University students under the guidance of Prof. Satnam Kour, Dean Students Welfare. He recalled his fond childhood memories of association with armed forces which have shaped his personality with discipline and nationalism. The resource person Col (Retd) Virinder Singh Dogra who is presently serving as Zila Sainik Welfare officer Udhampur has qualifying service of 30 years in Army to his credit and has held various key responsibilities during his glorious tenure. He has been instrumental in many operations like operation ‘Rakshak’, ‘Meghdoot’, ‘Vijay’. He elaborately explained the relevance and importance of the day in the life of Army personnel and that of civilians too who cherish freedom as there are soldiers protecting the borders for them. Earlier in her welcome address, Prof. Satnam Kour asserted that such occasions which have high national importance shall be marked with reverence by one and all and the Department of Students Welfare is always prepared to commemorate such occasions. She complemented Prof. S.K. Pandita, Chairman Campus Cultural Committee, Dr. A.R. Manhas, Assistant Dean, Capt. S.R. Dubey, Security Officer and Mr. Sumeet Sharma, Drama Instructor for successfully organizing the event which was attended by a sizeable gathering of teachers, students and scholars of the University of Jammu. The Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day of India is a day dedicated to India towards collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel. It has been observed annually in India on December 7 since 1949. Over the years, it has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers, airmen and sailors of India. Dr. Anupama Vohra, Associate Dean Students Welfare presented the formal vote of thanks. The event was conducted by Ramneet Kour and Namrta Chib and was managed by the members of Students Cultural Council.
