Jammu-Srinagar Highway closed due to heavy rain, snowfall, flight operations suspended

Srinagar:That time of the year when it rains as well as snows over the hilly states of North India, has begun. This time, rain and snow have made quite a marked appearance slightly earlier than they usually do. The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh have seen some significant amount of rains and snow. In fact, several locales including Banihal, Ramban, Patnitop, Gulmarg, Doda, Pahalgam, Rajauri as well as other higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, particularly Kufri, Narkanda and Solang Valley in Manali witnessed fresh snow. Not only this, reports of Srinagar witnessing its first spell of snow has also been floating around. Along with this, Gurez, Tulail, Razdan Pass, Sonamarg, Zojila, Amarnath Cave, Sadhna Top and Affarwat also saw some snow. The apple belt of Himachal Pradesh, Kharapathar also saw some snow. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Dharamsala recorded a whopping 84 mm of rainfall, Qazi Gund saw 54 mm of rains followed by 53 mm rain in Jammu. Other areas to have received good rains include Gulmarg 49 mm, Srinagar 22 mm, Hamirpur 33 mm, Keylong 33 mm, Kalpa 10 mm, Sundernagar 13 mm, Kullu 26.4 mm, Nahan 20.2 mm, and Shimla 14 mm. Due to constant rains and snowfall, Jammu Srinagar Highway as well as Mughal Road remained closed following snow at Jawahar Tunnel and Pir ki Gali. The Jammu Srinagar highway is the only road which is open the entire year and connects Kashmir to the rest of the country. Not only this, some inter-district and inter-state roads also remained closed due to snowfall. Reports of a snow avalanche have also come in due to which Three Army jawans have gone missing at Mani Post Bagtor Gurez sector of LoC in Bandipora As per weathermen, rain and snow are expected to continue today as well as tomorrow. Thereafter, as the Western Disturbance will move away from the region, weather will gradually clear up.
