The Department of Law and Placement Cell, University of Jammu today jointly organised extension lecture in the Department of Law by Ms. Avani Bansal, Advocate, Supreme Court of India on the topic "Planning your Law School Life and Career Prospects" for LL.B and LL.M students.

Head, Department of Law Prof. Arvind Jasrotia delivered welcome address and gave a brief introduction about the speaker. Prof. Jasrotia highlighted the importance of interaction between legal professionals and law students.

Advocate Ms. Avani Bansal did her Masters in Law from Harvard Law School and B.C.L. and M.Phil in Law from the University of Oxford. She is currently practicing as an Advocate in the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. Ms. Avani Bansal shared her real-life experiences with the students. She highlighted the importance of moot courts, debates, publications, and other extracurricular activities for shaping the students for facing the career opportunities in the legal field.  Ms Bansal insisted on the importance of excellence no matter how specialised the area of law chosen. She pointed out the importance of writing on legal issues no matter how humble the platform initially even personal blogs. She said that in a crowded profession like law, one has to make ones mark by writing on those platforms which judges read. She stressed the importance of attending moot courts. She proceeded to explain why education in countries like the UK and USA is worth the expense given the networks one became part of as well as the manner in which legal education was imparted in institutions there. She also underlined the importance of CV writing and internship, which plays important role in career building. The lecture was followed by interactive session with students of the Department of Law.

Prof. Dipankar Sengupta, Dean Placement, laid importance of such interaction and assured students of more such interactions in the near future. He also pointed out that placement in professional programmes is a student driven activity and that jointly with students a strategy for placing students of law would be prepared. He concurred with Ms Bansal on the point that internet had made the same resources available to students which were accessed by the law students in the best law schools of the world. The programme was conducted by Mr Raj Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Law and the formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Savita Nayyar, Sr. Assistant Professor.
