New Delhi:Rejecting a request to relax its ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi and nearby towns till November 1, the Supreme Court today said it was "pained and sad" that a communal colour had been given to its order.
The court's ban, which responds to petitions flagging deadly pollution, means that firecrackers will not be sold in Delhi and neighbouring areas on Diwali this time. Those who had already bought firecrackers can still burst them.
The order has divided opinion on social media, with some objecting to the ban on celebrations with fireworks during a "Hindu festival".
In November last year, the court had stopped the sale of fireworks within the National Capital Region, which includes Delhi and nearby areas, following the alarming rise in pollution levels after Diwali.
